Voracious Appetites
This past week I celebrated my birthday. It began as my heaven-sent assistant, Mary Brooke Lowe, entered the office bearing gifts: a big beautiful bottle of Grey Goose vodka & a Chocolate Cake from Market City Café. Proclaiming that 45 is the new 21 AND 8 all at the same time, I dug in! (the cake that is.) Yes, a true Aquarius am I.
I celebrated the big day with a birthday dinner @ The Back Burner Restaurant with my wife, Kim, and friends Gene & BJ Dunwody and Paul & Julie Tobin. They greeted me with birthday gifts of the Liquid Assets persuasion: yet another bottle of Grey Goose (they are TOAST readers) and Moet Chandon champagne. After a few Toasts of our own, we opened the menus…At 45 I’ve learned a new lesson: when your vision starts to fail….Order “The Special” or either remember your reading glasses!
I had the Escargot (which I would HIGHLY recommend) and the Steak AuPoivre. This is a fabulously quaint restaurant that I am ashamed to say I often overlook….but, one of my ’09 Resolutions is to frequent this pad more often. Owner/Chef/Frenchman/Redskin’s fan Christian Losito is truly gifted in the culinary arts!
Saturday night Kim & I chaired the Macon Symphony Orchestra’s January Pops @ the Macon City Auditorium. Sweet Caroline! is all I have to say about the Neil Diamond tribute concert featuring the stellar performance of Jay White. You can catch him in the Oscar nominated film “Frost/Nixon” in theatres now.
If you are a foodie, you were at the Foodie Awards on Sunday evening at the Grand Opera House. I must say BRAVO to Macon Food & Culture Magazine’s Gary Schecterle & Carla Malcom for turning this into a premiere Macon event. Kiss the cook and pass the crab cakes! Host Ben Jones of 13WMAZ was outstanding in his Scottish Kilt without offending anyone as far as I can tell.
Hail to the Chief…I mean, the Chef! Christian Losito of The Back Burner was awarded “Favorite Chef,” the “Fine Dining” award went to Grits Café and “Favorite Neighborhood Restaurant” went to The Red Tomato…to name a few! Make this show a must next year!
HELL HAS TRULY FROZEN OVER! My Dad is now on Facebook. I spent Sunday afternoon “hooking him up.” He was amazed to find “his people” are facebooking freaks just like the rest of us. So I’m just waiting…I know it will come soon…the day my old man utters the words so commonly spouted by today’s youths: “Facebook Me!”
